WIFI access points
After reading an article about wifi security last summer, I took my laptop out with a free program I found, and started driving around my hometown of 14000. It mapped the local wifi locations, channels, and whether they were encrypted or secured. I talked to a Sheriff friend, and several other friends and decided to contact some of these wifi sites, starting with 5 business' and 5 private locations that were in 'prime' locations and probably most vulnerable. After a Friday afternoon of visiting these locations we found the following results. The 5 business' had no idea they were open, they had been professionally installed. (saying this with a very big smirk :)) They all decided, when they saw me log onto the internet with their connection, that as a business this wasnt acceptable. And showing them that access to their network would not be that hard, especially when you lift a desk blotter and see a password written down, or open a drawer a see the password taped to the side of the drawer. The Sheriff Dept then sent out a letter to all the business' I had found, explaining what had been found. About half have been reconfigured, the other half are still open. Plus we recieved several calls from professionals wanting to know why we were causing trouble! And those sites are secure! and thats the polite language. Wish I had known of a hacker in the area, could we have put some of these 'Quacks' out of business and in big trouble. Strangely, when it came to the private home's wifi nets, it seems most of them are open on purpose! Some had neighbors they shared the connection with, felt the access should be available to all that needed it, and assorted other 'good reasons'. And here's where we ran into elderly people being taken by the pros again. But this turned out with a happy ending in one area of town. This area is about 6 square blocks of duplex retirement homes. While talking to one retired man and wife, they made a call to their grandson. He came right over and looked at what we had. He sat down a made some changes immediately, went to the neighbors, and did the same thing, since they were on the same network. This 15 year old, according to the sheriff, then spent the next 3 weeks getting paid by the retired people in this housing area to redo their networks. He cut the dsl connections by 20%, and hooked in about 10% more computers. Made almost $2000, and now does all these peoples lawns in the summer, and driveways in the winter, and computer work for them all year. And made almost $12,000 income last year. I'd be willing to bet this kid has more Grandma's and grandpa's than any other 16 yr old kid in the world.
